Ted Yoho Remains Top Republican on House Asia and the Pacific Subcommittee

Now in his fourth term in Congress, U.S. Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., will continue to lead Republicans on a key subcommittee under the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee’s umbrella.

Yoho will be the ranking Republican on the House Asia, the Pacific and Nonproliferation Subcommittee which he led as chairman when the GOP controlled the House. U.S. Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., will chair the committee.

The North Central Florida Republican announced his new role on Wednesday.

“For the past six years, I have had the privilege of serving on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and I am looking forward to ensuring America’s role as a global leader remains intact,” Yoho said. “I am honored to be named lead Republican for the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, and Nonproliferation. This subcommittee oversees U.S. policy and assistance in one of the most strategically important regions on earth.

“I am eager to work with Chairman Engel, lead Republican McCaul, and my colleagues on the full committee to address the global and regional challenges facing America and to preserve our nation’s interests abroad,” Yoho added.

Yoho is not the only Republican from the Sunshine State who will serve on the House Asia, the Pacific and Nonproliferation Subcommittee. U.S. Rep. Brian Mast, R-Fla., will also serve on it. No Democrats from Florida will be on the subcommittee.

Calling for term limits and taking aim at career politicians, Yoho, a large-animal veteran based out of Gainesville, shocked the political world when he defeated U.S. Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., who had served 24 years in Congress, in the Republican primary back in 2012. Sitting on the Agriculture and Foreign Affairs Committees, Yoho has been one of the leading conservatives in the Florida delegation and a favorite of the tea party movement. Yoho voted against former U.S. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to lead the House twice and challenged him for the gavel back in 2016.

Besides his role on the House Asia, the Pacific and Nonproliferation Subcommittee, Yoho also had a brief stint as vice chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee when the GOP had control of the chamber.
